On Sunday, February 18th 2018 the sun was shining and the day was majestic in Dromana! Carl Cox and Eric Powells put on another one of their precise performances! I have had the pleasure of working with these two gentleman for the past five years. If you have never seen Carl or Eric in person, this is one gig that you really do not want to miss! This time I want to relay a story about a boy that had his heart set on coming up on stage and dancing… I had just come from the front area of the event checking on the staff making sure that they were ready for the upcoming departures. I walked onto the balcony where Carl and Eric were playing their last few songs for the evening. I walked up behind Kyle (one of the security staff) and let him know that in a few minutes we would have to be ready to usher out the crowd. When I finished explaining this to him his expression turned to concern.
He looked at me and said “could you let this little boy come up on stage?” There is a policy that if you do not have a wrist band that you can only come onto the stage (balcony) if you are called up by Carl or Eric. I looked down and there is this little boy standing on the third stair from the ground. He was leaning on the banister with his right arm curled with his head nestled into the crease of where his forearm and bicep join. His left arm lay limp as his eyes were fixed upon the two men that were keeping the party going. I looked into his eyes and there was nothing there but that longing for the Magic to unfold.
I knew the rules, but I had to ask… I leaned forward and said “young man would you like to come up on stage?” His consciousness momentarily returned to him as he broke his thousand-yard stare from the stage. He looked at me with astonishing amazement as he replied “Oh Yes, Please!” I then gave him firm instructions to stay right here next to me.
If you could only have seen the joy in this little boy’s eyes! It was as though Santa Clause personally handed him the gift of his Dreams! He was elated as he danced his heart out to the rhythms Carl and Eric were laying down. I happened to look down the stairs where he had been standing and I saw a woman who was on the verge of tears smiling up at me mouthing “Thank You”. I realized that this must be his mother. I nodded to her and went back to scanning the crowd.
When I looked back at the stage the little boy was dancing his heart out! He was still in the same spot that I told him to remain in as well. I saw a friend of mine on stage and I had an idea. I went over to have a chat with my friend. When our chat was over I leaned down to the little boy… “Excuse me, but what is your name and how old are you?” I asked him. He looked at me a bit quizzically and said “my name is Oliver and I am eight years old”. I then told him… “the reason I asked you this is because I needed to know your name so that I can introduce you to Carl and Eric!” He immediately flew past me and down the stairs.
I saw him having a word to his mother and then I saw her reaction to what she was hearing him tell her. She looked at me with tears in her eyes as she thanked me once again. Oliver ran up the stairs as if he were being shipped off to the best camp in the world! I asked my friend Gracie over and then I introduced her to Oliver. She took Oliver by the hand and walked him over to the DJ booth. She spoke to Carl and Eric…
I turned back to the crowd as to keep an eye on things. Yet to my surprise the crowd was going nuts! When I turned back to where I had last seen Oliver; he was standing between Carl and Eric, he now had Carl’s headphones on his head and was actually mixing at the DJ booth! The crowd was literally reacting to Oliver’s version of the set!
Carl and Eric allowed Oliver to play and mix during their last set! They ended the session and then took a photo with him. What started out as a desire just to come up on stage ended up being so much more for one kid. I share this because in that one moment it felt ever so powerful. I saw this kid light up. When he was done he went to his mom and received the biggest hug. I saw the tears and the joy exuding from them both! I had know idea what one small act could mean to someone else.
Kyle asked me could this little boy come onto the stage. I just wanted him to see his want to come to fruition. Yet the thing that tugs on my emotional strings even now as I recap this story is that just a few moments before I walked out onto the stage. I was having a conversation with Gracie. I was explaining to her how we seldom do the things that make us happy. How we often get caught up in what I like to call the Thick of Thin Things! She could relate to what I was talking about and she looked at me with tears in her eyes and said to me “Live Your Best Life!”
